Module 2: Soil Health & Land Preparation

Learning Objectives
  • Identify key indicators of healthy soil
  • Describe common land preparation methods
  • Explain why soil testing matters before planting

Soil is a living system made up of minerals, organic matter, water, air, and microorganisms, and its health directly determines crop yield. Key indicators of good soil include dark color from organic matter, a crumbly texture, good drainage, and a near-neutral pH between 6 and 7 for most staple crops. Land preparation typically involves clearing, plowing or tilling to loosen compacted soil, and leveling to manage water flow; in many smallholder contexts this is done with hand tools or hired tractor services rather than owned machinery. A simple soil test, available cheaply through many state agricultural extension offices in Nigeria, reveals nutrient deficiencies before a farmer spends money on the wrong fertilizer.

Module Quiz
