Module 9: Financing & Scaling an Agribusiness

Learning Objectives
  • Identify common financing sources available to small farmers and agripreneurs
  • Explain the role of cooperatives in accessing credit and markets
  • Outline basic steps to scale a farming operation sustainably

Financing options for farmers range from personal savings and family contributions, to microfinance banks and agricultural lending schemes such as Nigeria's Anchor Borrowers' Programme, to grants and competitions run by development organizations and government agencies. Cooperatives pool members' resources and bargaining power, making it easier to access bulk input discounts, shared equipment, and formal credit that would be out of reach for an individual smallholder. Scaling sustainably means growing output only as fast as markets, storage, and labor can absorb it; common early steps include reinvesting profit rather than consuming all of it, formalizing record-keeping of costs and sales, and gradually adding value-added processing rather than only selling raw produce.
