Module 3: Writing Clear, Compelling Headlines
- Apply at least three common headline formulas
- Explain why specificity improves headline performance
- Distinguish clickbait from a strong, honest headline
Reliable headline formulas include the how-to ('How to Write a CV Employers Notice'), the list ('7 Mistakes New Freelancers Make'), and the question ('Are You Making This Common Interview Mistake?'), each setting a clear expectation of what the reader will get. Specific headlines -- using numbers, named outcomes, or concrete timeframes -- consistently outperform vague ones because they tell the reader exactly what they're about to receive, reducing uncertainty about whether it's worth their time. Clickbait promises something sensational that the content then fails to deliver; a strong headline, by contrast, is both compelling and honest, since breaking that promise repeatedly damages reader trust and brand reputation over time.
1. What is the main problem with clickbait headlines?
2. Why do specific headlines (with numbers or concrete outcomes) tend to perform better?
