Module 12: Careers in Health & Public Health

Learning Objectives
  • Identify common public health career roles beyond direct clinical practice
  • List major global health organizations that employ public health professionals
  • Compare pathways through further study versus direct field experience

Public health careers extend well beyond doctors and nurses: roles include epidemiologists who investigate disease patterns, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) officers who track whether programs achieve their targets, health economists who analyze financing and cost-effectiveness, and community health workers who deliver frontline prevention and education in underserved areas. Major employers in this space include national ministries of health, the WHO and its regional office for Africa, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC, established by the African Union in 2017), and international funders and implementers such as the Global Fund, Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, alongside large international NGOs. A Master of Public Health (MPH) is the standard graduate credential for many senior public health roles and is useful for formalizing skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, and health policy, but substantial field experience -- such as working with a local NGO on an immunization or malaria program -- is often equally valued by employers, especially for program management roles. For professionals in Nigeria and across Africa, remote and hybrid roles in global health data analysis, grant writing, and program monitoring have grown as international organizations increasingly hire local talent for positions that don't require physical relocation, often paying in US dollars for specialized skills in short local supply.
