Module 1: Introduction to the Hospitality & Tourism Industry
- Identify the main sectors within hospitality and tourism
- Explain how tourism contributes to national economies
- Recognize key career pathways in the industry
Hospitality and tourism is made up of several interlinked sectors: accommodation (hotels, guesthouses, lodges), food and beverage, travel and tour operations, attractions and heritage sites, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions). Globally, travel and tourism contributes close to a tenth of world GDP according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, and in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria it is a growing source of foreign exchange and employment. Because the industry is service-based, it offers wide entry points -- front office, housekeeping, food and beverage service, tour guiding, and event planning -- that do not always require a university degree to start.
1. Why is hospitality considered an accessible industry for career entry?
2. Which of the following best describes the MICE segment of tourism?
