Module 8: Web Hosting & Deployment
- Explain what deployment means
- Compare common free hosting options for static sites
- Connect a custom domain to a deployed site
Deployment is the process of publishing your code so it's accessible on the public internet rather than only viewable on your own computer. For the static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript sites covered in this course, free platforms like GitHub Pages, Netlify, and Vercel let you deploy directly from a GitHub repository in minutes, automatically rebuilding and republishing the live site every time you push new code -- a workflow known as continuous deployment. Once deployed, a site gets a free subdomain, such as yourproject.vercel.app, but you can connect a custom domain name purchased from a registrar to make the address match your brand, which typically involves updating DNS records to point the domain at the hosting provider.
