Module 9: Careers & Entry Points in the Green Economy

Learning Objectives
  • Identify common job roles across the renewable energy value chain
  • Describe transferable skills valued in green economy roles
  • Outline practical entry points into solar sales, installation, or sustainability work

The renewable energy value chain includes design and engineering roles, sales and customer-facing PAYG agents, installation and maintenance technicians, and policy or sustainability consultants who help organizations measure and report their environmental impact. Many of these roles reward transferable skills rather than requiring a full engineering degree: basic electrical aptitude supports installation work, strong community trust and communication skills are essential for PAYG sales agents, and data literacy supports ESG reporting and analysis roles. Practical entry points for newcomers include vocational or technical training in solar installation, applying directly to off-grid solar companies for field sales agent positions (often one of the lowest-barrier entry roles in the sector), or completing an online sustainability fundamentals course before pursuing more specialized certifications.
