Module 12: Landing Your First Engineering Role

Learning Objectives
  • Prepare for common technical interview formats
  • Build a portfolio of real, deployed projects
  • Identify remote and junior-friendly roles realistically open to new engineers

Most software engineering interviews combine a few formats: a technical screen (often live coding on a shared platform), a take-home project, and a behavioral interview assessing communication and teamwork. You will learn to approach live coding calmly: talk through your thinking out loud, clarify the problem before writing code, and start with a working, simple solution before optimizing it, since interviewers generally care more about your reasoning process than a perfect first answer. Because software engineering output, working, deployed code, can be evaluated entirely online, it is one of the most remote-accessible career paths available, with companies across the world hiring engineers based on a portfolio of real projects and a GitHub profile rather than physical location. You will finish this module with a plan for which junior-friendly roles and remote job boards to target first.
