Module 7: Writing for Social Media & Short-Form Content
- Identify how platform norms shape caption length and tone
- Write a hook that captures attention in the first line
- Apply a consistent brand voice across different platforms
Different platforms reward different writing styles: LinkedIn tends to favor longer, more professional or reflective posts, while Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) favor brevity, since on Instagram only the first line or two of a caption shows before a reader must tap 'more.' Because of this, the opening line -- the hook -- carries disproportionate weight; it has to earn attention within seconds or the rest of the post goes unread. Brand voice is the consistent personality a writer maintains across platforms -- playful, authoritative, warm, or direct -- and keeping it consistent over time is what makes an audience recognize and trust the content as it moves between channels.
