Module 9: Freelancing & Building a Writing Portfolio

Learning Objectives
  • Identify common platforms and methods for finding freelance writing clients
  • Build a portfolio that demonstrates range and measurable results
  • Compare common freelance pricing models

Freelance writers commonly find clients through platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, direct outreach or cold pitching to businesses and content agencies, and networking on LinkedIn, where sharing writing samples publicly can attract inbound interest. A strong portfolio typically includes three to five varied samples -- even self-initiated 'spec' pieces are acceptable when starting out -- and ideally highlights measurable outcomes, such as a blog post that ranked well for a target keyword or drove a specific increase in engagement. Pricing can be structured per word, per hour, or as a flat per-project fee; experienced freelancers often prefer per-project pricing because it rewards efficiency and expertise rather than penalizing a writer for working quickly.
