Module 3: SEO Fundamentals

Learning Objectives
  • Explain the difference between on-page, off-page, and technical SEO
  • Identify Google's Core Web Vitals and why they matter for ranking
  • Write a title tag and meta description that improve click-through rate

Search engine optimization has three pillars: on-page SEO (content, headings, title tags, keyword use), technical SEO (site speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability), and off-page SEO (backlinks from other credible sites). Google's Core Web Vitals -- Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Interaction to Next Paint, which replaced First Input Delay as the responsiveness metric in March 2024 -- are page-experience signals Google uses alongside content relevance when ranking pages. A well-written title tag and meta description do not directly boost rankings but strongly influence whether a searcher clicks your result over a competitor's, so they should include the target keyword and a clear reason to click. Because most searchers never go past the first page of results, ranking for the right, specific keywords (long-tail phrases with lower competition) is often more achievable for a new site than competing for broad, high-volume terms.
