Module 8: Email Marketing & Marketing Automation

Learning Objectives
  • Explain how segmentation and personalization improve email performance
  • Describe what SPF, DKIM, and DMARC do for email deliverability
  • Design a simple drip sequence for a new subscriber

Segmented, personalized email campaigns consistently outperform generic blasts sent to an entire list, because messages relevant to a recipient's behavior or interests are more likely to be opened and clicked -- industry benchmarks from email platforms typically show average open rates in the high teens to mid-20s percent and click-through rates in the low single digits, though this varies significantly by industry and list quality. Deliverability -- whether an email reaches the inbox instead of spam -- depends partly on authentication records: SPF (Sender Policy Framework) lists which servers may send on a domain's behalf, DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) cryptographically signs messages to prove they weren't altered, and DMARC tells receiving servers what to do if SPF or DKIM checks fail. Marketing automation tools let a business set up a 'drip' sequence -- a series of emails triggered automatically by an action like signing up -- so a welcome email, a product explainer, and a first offer go out on a schedule without manual effort. Compliance also matters: laws such as the EU's GDPR and the US's CAN-SPAM Act require a visible unsubscribe option and, in GDPR's case, clear consent before emailing someone, and ignoring these rules risks fines and damaged sender reputation.
