Module 11: Product-Led Growth & Monetization
- Compare common monetization models like freemium and subscription
- Explain core product-led growth loops
- Evaluate pricing decisions relevant to African and global markets
Monetization models shape how a product grows: freemium offers a free tier to attract users broadly and converts a percentage to paid plans with added value, while subscription models charge recurring fees for ongoing access, and usage-based pricing charges according to actual consumption, common in infrastructure and API products. Product-led growth (PLG) describes products that grow primarily through the product experience itself, for example a user inviting a colleague to collaborate, rather than through a traditional sales team; a strong PLG loop makes using the product naturally lead to new users discovering it. In markets across Nigeria and much of Africa, pricing decisions also have to account for currency volatility, varying purchasing power, and the reality that charging in US dollars can price out otherwise ideal local customers, which is why many successful African products use tiered, localized, or naira-denominated pricing.
