Module 1: Foundations of Social Media Marketing

Learning Objectives
  • Explain the difference between awareness, engagement, and conversion goals
  • Align social media activity with overall business objectives
  • Identify which social media goal matters most at each business stage

Social media marketing serves three broad goals that require different content and metrics: awareness (getting a brand noticed by new people), engagement (building an active, interested community around the brand), and conversion (turning followers into paying customers or leads). A new business with few followers typically should prioritize awareness and engagement before investing heavily in conversion-focused content, since conversion tactics work best once there is an audience large and warm enough to convert. Every social media activity should tie back to a business objective -- more followers alone means nothing if it doesn't eventually support sales, brand reputation, or customer retention. Treating social media as a standalone creative hobby, disconnected from business goals, is one of the most common reasons businesses feel their social media 'isn't working' despite consistent posting.
