Module 6: Paid Social Advertising Basics

Learning Objectives
  • Distinguish a 'boosted post' from a full ads-manager campaign
  • Define a basic target audience using demographics and interests
  • Set a realistic test budget for a first paid campaign

Boosting a post is the simplest form of paid promotion -- paying to show an existing post to a wider audience with minimal targeting options -- while a full campaign built in a platform's ads manager (such as Meta Ads Manager) offers far more control over objectives, detailed audience targeting, ad placement, and performance tracking, generally delivering better results for the same budget once a business learns the basics. A target audience is typically defined using demographics (age, location, gender), interests (pages or topics they engage with), and sometimes behaviors -- narrowing the audience too much can raise costs and limit reach, while targeting too broadly wastes budget on uninterested viewers. New advertisers should start with a small test budget -- even as little as a few thousand naira per day -- running multiple ad variations briefly to see which performs best before committing a larger budget to the winning version. Paid advertising amplifies content; it rarely fixes content that isn't working organically, so testing messaging organically first is usually a more cost-effective starting point than paying to promote untested content.
