Module 10: Conversion Rate Optimization & Growth Experimentation

Learning Objectives
  • Identify common landing page elements that influence conversion rate
  • Explain the AARRR (pirate metrics) framework for growth
  • Design an experiment with a clear hypothesis and success metric

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) focuses on getting more value from traffic you already have, rather than buying more of it -- common levers include a clear above-the-fold headline, a single obvious call-to-action, trust signals like testimonials or security badges, and removing unnecessary form fields that cause drop-off. The AARRR framework, often called 'pirate metrics' and popularized by investor Dave McClure, breaks the customer lifecycle into Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and Revenue, giving growth teams a shared vocabulary for diagnosing exactly where in the funnel users are being lost. A good growth experiment states a clear hypothesis ('changing the CTA button color from grey to green will increase clicks because it is more visually distinct'), defines a single success metric in advance, and runs long enough to reach statistical significance before a result is trusted. Tools like heatmaps and session recordings (for example Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity) show where users actually click, scroll, and hesitate, often revealing friction points that raw conversion numbers alone don't explain.
