Module 11: Building a Career in Digital Marketing

Learning Objectives
  • Identify recognized entry-level certifications in digital marketing
  • Compare employed, agency, and freelance paths into the field
  • Build a portfolio that demonstrates real campaign results

Free and low-cost certifications from the platforms themselves -- such as Google's Skillshop (formerly Google Ads certifications), HubSpot Academy's content and inbound marketing courses, and Meta Blueprint -- are widely recognized starting credentials because they are issued by the companies whose tools employers actually use. Three common entry paths are an in-house marketing role at a single company, an agency role managing multiple clients' campaigns at once (which builds breadth faster), and freelancing through platforms like Upwork or Fiverr, which can pay in US dollars and suit marketers in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa looking to serve international clients remotely. Employers in this field consistently weigh a portfolio of real, measurable results -- even from a volunteer project, a personal blog, or a small business's social account -- more heavily than certificates alone, because it demonstrates the ability to actually move a metric, not just describe a framework. Because digital marketing tools and platform algorithms change frequently, staying current through official platform blogs and documentation is as important to a long-term career as any single course.
