Module 2: Know Your Audience -- Market Research & Personas
Learning Objectives
- Conduct basic market and competitor research
- Build a simple buyer persona
- Use audience data to shape messaging
Effective marketing starts with knowing who you're talking to. Market research -- surveys, competitor analysis, and free tools like Google Trends or Meta's Audience Insights -- reveals what your target customers want, where they spend time online, and what problems they face. A buyer persona is a semi-fictional profile of your ideal customer, including demographics, goals, frustrations, and preferred platforms. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons small business and NGO campaigns underperform: generic messaging sent to everyone converts far fewer people than specific messaging sent to the right audience.
